Launch of new book by Arthur Tompkins – “Plundering Beauty: A History of Art Crime during War”

Our very own Chairperson Judge Arthur Tompkins has written an enthralling new book, Plundering Beauty: A History of Art Crime during War.

“From the many wars of Classical Antiquity, through the military turning points and detours of the Fourth Crusade, the Thirty Years’ War, Revolutionary and Napoleonic France, World Wars I and II, and then onwards to the ongoing contemporary conflicts in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and Libya, the history of art crime in times of war contains myriad fascinating and often little-known stories of the fate of humankind’s greatest works of art. Plundering Beauty: A History of Art Crime During War charts the crucial milestones of art crimes spanning two thousand years.”

You can read Penelope Jackson’s review of the book here on the ARCA website.

This exciting new book is available to purchase online and in bookstores (including on Amazon here).

ARCA Postgraduate Programme and 2018 Annual Interdisciplinary Art Crime Conference

The Association for Research into Crime Against Art (ARCA) runs a summer-long eleven course interdisciplinary professional program in Amelia, Italy.  This course provides students with in-depth, postgraduate-level instruction in a wide-variety of theoretical and practical elements relating to art and heritage crime.  Visit ARCA’s website here for more information and to apply.

ARCA is also holding its annual Interdisciplinary Art Crime Conference (this year is its 10th anniversary!) in Amelia from the 22-24 June 2018.  Geared towards international organisations, national enforcement agencies, academics, and cultural institutions working in the field, and private sector professionals involved in the art and antiquities market, the Amelia Conference follows a long-established commitment by the Association to examine contemporary issues of common concern in an open, non-combative, multi-disciplinary format, in order to build capacity in the field.  Click here for more information and to register for the conference.
